Designing a wedding tablescape is no easy feat, but it doesn’t require a professional! The place settings at your wedding reception play an important role, complementing your theme and lending to the overall aesthetic. For which reason, we want to help you gain the confidence to DIY. Keep reading to learn how to create a wedding tablescape, with tips and tricks for a photo-worthy set up! Plus, get inspired with some of our favorite details and color schemes, for every type and style of wedding.

Establish a Color Scheme

One of the first things you will want to do is establish a color scheme. Usually, your tablescape will match your wedding color scheme. But in some cases, you may choose to rule out certain colors. For example, if your color scheme is navy, burgundy and white, and your floral centerpieces include a lot of burgundy. You may then opt for a navy and white place setting - so as not to overwhelm with red. Or you may use a different tone of red or pink, like blush. When it comes to serving ware, you will also want to consider metallic accents. The most popular are gold, silver and copper. Once established work from the ground up, starting with the table itself, always considering how colors work together along the way.

Define Your Style

In addition to a color palette, you will want to hone in on your style. Like colors, it should complement your overall theme. So if you are hosting a rustic barn wedding, you probably won’t want overly modern or eclectic servingware. And if you’re hosting a moody or alternative event, stray away from bright colors. Instead, play into your rtheme. For example, if you’re hosting a Bohemian event, go with Earthen China and warm-toned rentals. Or if you’re planning a vintage-inspired wedding, feature colored glassware and antique mismatched china. Once put together, all of these pieces should match, if not amplify, your event style.

Incorporate Different Textures

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when designing a wedding tablescape is a lack of texture. Texture will make your place settings more aesthetically pleasing and more inviting. You can incorporate texture in a wide variety of ways, from the table itself to the linens and the serving ware. Some popular ways include rattan or wicker chargers. Velvet or knit table linens and napkins. Glassware, whether it features a contemporary or vintage shape. Or even your furniture, such as a solid wood tabletop. Aim to find a balance, where you feature texture but not so much as to overwhelm the eye.

Don’t Skip the Details

As important as texture are the little details. These small inclusions are what will set your tablescape apart from every other brides. One of the most popular options are with escort cards. These can be made with next to anything and feature a guest's name - if you have assigned seating. Alternatively, consider creating a dinner or drink menu to be placed at each seat. If you want a more personal touch, you can create a small thank-you note, thanking your family and friends for attending.
